Four Tips for a Celebration of Life

Creating an appropriate celebration of life involves a lot of decisions. Ideally, we can create these remembrances with the loved one before they pass, but, so often, we lose someone suddenly and we are left with creating a special memorial while we are dealing with the grief of our loss.

So here are a few ideas to create a celebration of life that gives mourners time to remember, grieve and say their goodbyes.

Celebrant | Pastor

The first big decision to make is, who will officiate the funeral? It is important to pick someone who can properly tell your loved one’s story, engage those who have gathered to remember and offer words of peace and healing during this difficult time.

I’ve heard many stories about celebrants who make the focus on themselves, or share messages that don’t reflect the families’ values. I would love the chance to tell your loved one’s story. Schedule time for an introduction here and lets start the conversation.

Personalize

Having voices with a personal connection to the decedent is key. Wether its their children, siblings, long-time friends or business associates, stories born of shared experiences help everyone feel closer to your loved one.

It is important that those chosen to share have prepared notes as many are overcome with emotions when they share. Notes can help them communicate more fully if emotions overwhelm them.

Additionally, choose speakers who will be to the ceremony on time. Choosing participants that often have trouble getting out of the house or hung up in transit could create undo stress when it comes time to start the celebration of life.

Music

Music is an important expression of one’s memory. So often, we feel confined to hymns played on a traditional instrument. But this is your celebration and it is important that it is uniquely you!

I’ve heard soloists sing any number of songs from church music to classic rock songs to modern popular music. Additionally, families have shared popular songs from any number of genres. Simply playing a song and offering a moment of reflection in the ceremony, playing a song as people walk past a casket or socialize after the ceremony or adding songs to the memorial photo video are all great way to include your loved one’s favorite songs in their celebration of life.

Photos and Videos

Photos tell the story of your loved one in a very special way. Additionally, you can add movement, music and text to your photos by having a video professional edit them into a special visual memorial.

60-80 photos are all you need to make a video about five minutes in length to tell your loved’s one beautiful story. I can help you! Schedule and intro to discuss your needs and pricing.

These are just the basic elements of a celebration that reflects your loved one’s unique life and story. Again, picking the right celebrant is the first step to excellent memorial. Schedule an introduction now and let’s plan plan your celebration of life.
